WildCats Edge Eagles 5-4 In First-Round Match

BRIDGEWATER - Randolph College won four of the six singles matches Tuesday to erase a 2-1 doubles deficit and the WildCats defeated Bridgewater College 5-4 in a first-round match in the ODAC women's tennis tournament.

Randolph, the No. 5 seed, took the first point of the match as Aubrey Hahn and Keyu Jin defeated Nicole Shifflett and Stephanie Barton, 8-1 at the No. 1 doubles flight. Bridgewater, seeded No. 4 in the tournament field, evened the score with a win at No. 2 as Whitney Kiser and Shannon Quinn took an 8-1 victory over Ashley Schmitz and Sarah Mueller. Bridgewater took a 2-1 lead when Rachel Zarin and Ashley Price turned back Kristyn Underwood and Ranita Opoki-Sarfo, 8-2, to win No. 3 doubles.

The Eagles took a 3-1 lead when Quinn was first off the court in singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Mueller at No. 4 singles. Randolph added a point when Schmitz held off Shifflett 6-3, 6-4 at the No, 2 flight.

Bridgewater moved ahead 4-2 as Rachel Crawford rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Opoku-Sarfo at No. 5, but the WildCats won the final three remaining matches to take the team victory.

Jin moved the visitors closer with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Kiser and the WildCats pulled even when Hahn downed Barton at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1.

The match was decided at No. 6 singles where Randolph's Shelby Lutz outlasted Zarin 7-5, 6-3.

Bridgewater ended its 2018 season with an 11-8 record.
